Microsoft puts net at its heart

Web developers have gathered in Las Vegas for Microsoft's annual Mix conference. Blogger and journalist Ewan Spence gives an overview of the talking points from the event.
"We are placing the internet at the centre of our strategy," was the key message that Ray Ozzie, chief technology officer of Microsoft, got over to the attendees at the company's Mix08 conference in Las Vegas this week.
The annual "72 hour conversation" is where the Redmond based company sets out its vision and strategy for the next year.
The big picture driving Microsoft, explained Ozzie, was one of the internet and marketing shaping changes over every product line.
These changes should ensure that there is sufficient space for advertising to be presented to an increasing user base, both in the products and on community and content sites; incidentally this need for advertising space is one reason why Microsoft has shown an interest in Yahoo.
"The Web is acting as a hub for more devices every day," says Ozzie
Typical view
Previously the typical view of the internet was something that a PC would connect to. Now internet aware devices are becoming more commonplace. From 3G enabled smart phones, to digital music players and gaming machines; more consumer electronics are going online.
As people carry more of these devices, they are building their own "personal internet", and Microsoft hope to make the experience of working in this net as seamless as possible.
People should be able to move their information, media and even full programs between these devices without having to worry about if something will or will not work.

Microsoft is pushing Silverlight for rich media websites
This web of devices can be viewed as many small pieces, loosely joined. Developers want to spend more time writing one program that can run on many of these devices, rather than have their creativity suppressed because they must spend time testing compatibility across the range of products.
Microsoft's Silverlight technology is where a lot of effort to solve this problem will be focused on.
This is a set of tools that plugs into your web browser and allows websites to display rich media content and applications - in a similar fashion to Adobe's Flash system.
With a heavy focus on media, especially video, Silverlight can deliver very complicated and detailed web pages.
Multi-view television
Demonstrations at Mix08 included multi-view television where viewers can decide on camera angles and what to watch, and AOL's updated web email client that delivers an experience comparable to a mail client running on your own computer.
The first version of the technology has seen a solid uptake, with 1.5 million copies of the plug-in downloaded every day.
Already available for Windows PC's, Macs and Linux, Microsoft also reiterated the announcement that Nokia would make Silverlight available for the majority of their handsets and internet tablets.

In recent years alternate browsers such as Apple's Safari and Mozilla's Firefox have become increasingly popular, in part due to following internet standards in how pages are displayed - subtle differences between browsers can sometimes make pages look different on IE than in Firefox, for example.
This is no longer the case - the part of IE8 that displays a page has been completely re-written to be standards compliant, much like Safari and Firefox.
Developers will be able to spend much less time making a site work in each browser, and can concentrate on delivering a much better experience.
At a stroke, the single biggest complaint from web developers about Microsoft's browsers have been answered, and the initial reaction from the developers towards the sentiment is positive, albeit with the knowledge that this brings the browser to the same level as others.
Where IE8 is going to prove a success is in connecting the user to information on websites as they journey around the internet.

Silverlight has been dubbed a "flash killer"
Microsoft have made it easy for websites that provide services to be used from any other website. For example, if you highlight a street address in IE8, the right click menu will allow you to bring up the location on through the Live Maps service. Find an interesting item you're looking to buy? Right click and be taken directly to the Ebay search results for that product.
Another new element can then be used; Web Slices allow you to subscribe to part of a page and be alerted when the information changes.
Such as when you find the perfect item on Ebay you can use a web slice to subscribe to just that one item; which is then easily followed from the IE8 toolbar.
What Microsoft has chosen to show at Mix08 are not finished products, but the first wave of new products that will become generally available over the next six months. If they continue to innovate and keep both the user experience and the requirements of developers in mind, then their product portfolio is going to be strong and compelling.
The key will be for Microsoft to continue to operate in the currently turbulent business environment, while giving their product teams the confidence to ignore the distractions, such as proposed mergers with Yahoo, and continue to develop the software.

Doctors use brain scans ''read minds"

U.S. scientists said researchers may soon be able to use brain-scanning instruments to read someone's mind.Dr. Jack Gallant, a neuroscientist at the University of California in Berkeley, said his team has figured out how to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to tell what someone is looking at based on brain activity.A report, published online in the journal Nature, said it is the first step to being able to see the contents of someone's visual experiences."When the deck of cards, or photographs, has about 120 images, we can do better than 90 percent correct," Gallant said.He said the next step is to interpret what someone is seeing without having the subject select from known images.The research team said a device that can read out the brain's activity could be used to assess damage from strokes, the effect of drug treatments or to help diagnose conditions such as dementia.

Apple's iPhone SDK Strategy Both Promotes and Stifles Innovation

One of the earliest complaints about the iPhone--even before it was a shipping product--was that it could only use Web-based applications, which couldn't offer the same functionality as native applications. Today's announcement of the iPhone software developer's kit (SDK) fixes that limitation--and by doing so, sets the stage for the iPhone as the phone to beat. Period.
Open Development
Apple's SDK blows open the process of creating native apps for the iPhone by letting most any would-be coder get started. Developers can sign up and download the SDK for free, which in turn allows Apple to reach out to a wider cross-section of would-be coders than they might have otherwise.
According to iPhoneDevCamp co-founder Raven Zachary, "The fear [in the development community] today was that Apple was going to constrain the ability for third-party developers to distribute apps, in the same way they did with the iPod games market." There, Zachary notes, Apple made it very difficult for small developers to create and release a game: "You have to get Apple's approval, have them approve the source code, and then they take a large percentage of the profits for the distribution of that app.
"What we've seen instead is Apple opening up the marketplace in the same way they've opened up the podcast directory in iTunes Music Store. They will be far more open about letting developers list their apps," says Zachary.
The Windows Question
Developers will need to do so in a Mac environment, though. And that leaves an open question as to how well these apps will be able to tie into the PC universe. So far, even Apple's own synchronization with Windows-based content has been limited, at best--and what the iPhone/iPod Touch can do, they do through the existing Windows iTunes framework. What will happen when hundreds of developers try to create apps that tap into content on a PC? Will all scenarios be supported?
Those questions remain big question marks for now. But many in the industry appear bullish on the prospects for third-party iPhone/iPod Touch software. Venture capitalist firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers announced it was creating the $100 million iFund to help new developers for the Apple handheld platform. This move marks the latest effort by a VC firm to back software development; already, Facebook and Google's Android are among the available vertical funds, although neither of those has the same resources as the newly announced iFund.
Ultimately, Zachary remains optimistic that Apple's strategy will be good for developers in the long-run. There's huge opportunity for commercialization and revenue generation, he says. The fees, he adds, are not too outrageous, either: To publish apps, you have to do so through the iTunes App Store for a fee of $99 (Apple will receive 30 percent of the revenues earned on any apps sold through the App Store).
Some have questioned that number as being a high piece of the action, but Zachary thinks it's right on target. "I think it's fair. That number will drive thousands of developers to the platform. Apple will be absorbing all of the costs associated with bandwidth, distribution, and marketing. The net benefit probably outweighs the costs."

UAE company signs $110 mn transponder lease deal

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) based state-owned satellite communications company Yahsat has signed a $110 million contract to lease transponders to Emerging Markets Communications (EMC), a leading provider of satellite communications, WAM news agency reported Friday.
Under the terms of the contract signed Thursday EMC would lease C-Band transponders on Yahsat’s communications satellites on a long-term basis to provide communication facilities to government, commercial and non-profit organizations including the UN.
“Strategic partnership is among the most important business principles for us, and it reflects on Yahsat’s strategy to have successful relationships with its partners and clients,” commented Waleed Ahmed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, chairman Yahsat, during the official signing ceremony.
EMC specializes in providing diverse communications facilities to its customers, which include international NGOs and Fortune 500 companies. The company’s satellite services are extensively deployed by international rescue operations and humanitarian activities.
“Both Yahsat and EMC maintain a constant flow of investment and innovation to provide customers with the right options of services in the region as well as other emerging markets,” EMC President Abel Avellan said.

The first Test in the forthcoming three-match rubber between India and South Africa will be played at the Chidambaram stadium, Chepauk, in Chennai from March 26 to 30, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said on Wednesday.
The second and third Tests will be at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad (April 3-7) and Kanpur's Green Park (April 11-15) respectively.
The visitors will land in Kolkata after flying in from Dhaka on March 15 before proceeding to Goa for a short holiday, according to BCCI sources.

Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced several moves it says will help its business customers take advantage of a technology called virtualization, and in the process help the software maker catch up with VMware Inc., the frontrunner in that area.
Virtualization allows one physical computer to house multiple “virtual machines,” each one acting like a separate computer with an operating system and all the software that runs on top of it.
For office workers, virtualization might mean that “their computer” is actually a virtual machine running on a server - not the actual hardware on their desks - and can be accessed from any work station. That, in turn, could make it easier for IT workers to install new applications across an entire company network or back up an individual’s computer with all its settings, and would make losing a laptop much less disastrous. What’s more, older hardware that would have been replaced can have a longer life connecting to virtual desktops housed on more powerful servers.
To help move the virtual desktop scenario forward, Microsoft said Monday it plans to acquire Calista Technologies Inc., a San Jose, Calif.-based startup founded in 2006. Calista’s technology makes logging on to a virtual desktop feel more like working on a physical Windows computer, Microsoft said. No financial details of the agreement were disclosed.
Microsoft also said it will expand an alliance with another virtual desktop computing company, Citrix Systems Inc., that will help their respective products work well together.
Redmond-based Microsoft also announced it will cut the cost of licensing Windows for use on virtual machines to $23 from $78 per year for its big business customers.
Reversing its previous policy, the company said all versions of Windows Vista, including the least expensive Vista Home Basic, can be virtualized.
Microsoft is set to launch the next generation of its server operating system, Windows Server 2008, in February, but a key piece of software that enables virtualization, Hyper-V, won’t be available until six months later. Once all the pieces fall into place, however, Microsoft says its line of server and desktop virtualization technology and the programs IT workers need to manage their mix of virtual and physical machines will push many more to adopt the trend.
“We estimate that less than 5 percent of companies are utilizing virtualization technology because it is simply too cost-prohibitive and complex,” said Bob Muglia, senior vice present of the Server and Tools business at Microsoft, in a statement. “We believe Microsoft’s comprehensive approach - from desktop to datacenter - is unique to the industry.”
Not so, said Raghu Raghuram, vice president of products and solutions at VMware, which began selling server virtualization technology in 2001 and has captured as much as of 80 percent of the market, according to analysts.
“Microsoft is putting the foundation in place. We’ve got a several-story office building already there, with people moved in,” he said. Raghuram said VMware’s products match what Microsoft plans to offer, and then some.
In interviews, both companies pushed their set of virtualization tools as lower-cost. Yankee Group analyst Laura DiDio said in an interview that a comparable Microsoft offering could cost as little as one-third of what VMWare charges.
“Until recently, there was not much competition,” she said. “Now what I’m hearing from customers is, they’re glad to see Microsoft stepping up to the plate. They like VMWare’s products, but they don’t want to pay those high prices.”

This man works wonders, album after album, and never fails to disappoint listeners. Music maestro A.R. Rahman has done it again. He returns after “Guru” to compose the soundtrack of “Jodhaa-Akbar” that has already been showered with praises.
Packed with two instrumental numbers and five tracks, “Jodhaa-Akbar” has the makings of a hit.
Elaborate arrangements include the trumpets and the drums in “Azeem O Shaan Shehenshah”. It is a wonderful composition and Mohammad Aslam and Bonnie Chakraborty, who have sung it, have done justice to the song. Lyrics by Javed Akhtar are up to the mark.
Sonu Nigam and Madhushree render a romantic piece titled “In lamhon ke daaman mein” that initially seems like any other track until it picks up pace. Javed Akhtar pens noteworthy lyrics while Rahman’s music keeps the standard you expect from the maestro himself.
“Jashn e bahaare”, sung by Javed Ali, comes next. The soft, serene and romantic piece displays an ideal fusion of Ali’s vocals with string music. There’s also a “Jashn e bahaare (instrumental)”, which gives the flute a key position in the track.
Rahman finally makes his presence felt in areas other than compositions by singing “Khwaja mere Khwaja”. His rendition coupled with the harmonium, tabla (percussion) and claps make for marvellous music. One begins to wonder how a qawaali could impress to this extent that it ensures immediate gratification to everyone. “Khwaja mere Khwaja” (instrumental) is as good as the previous instrumental number belted out.
“Mann Mohana” comes in the end as an average number. This track, rendered by Bela Shende, is not too bad but after listening to the other numbers in the album, one would prefer placing it at the bottom of the six.
Rahman has once again proved that what he composes is of a completely different genre, standard and calibre. He stands in a place where there can be no competitors; his is a level that cannot be matched.

Speaking after launching the outlet, Sangeeta Talwar, Executive Director Tata Tea Limited said: 'Chai Unchai' outlet, one of the unique business initiative of the company, was crafted as a unique retail space in the Out of Home segment that connects youth in an exciting and differentiated manner.
Stating that the new business initiative 'Chai Unchai' a new hangout was designed in such a way that offers an ambiance of warm, friendly, unpretentious and fun which was undoubtedly very much different from the concept of a kiosk or a parlour.

Infosys fines its CEO for voilating insider trading rules !!!

Infosys is not only an IT bellwether, it's also an ethical bellwether. The company, in perhaps the first instance in India, has fined its CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan for a technical violation of its insider trading rules. The fine, Rs 5 lakh, would be donated to charity. Besides the CEO, an independent director, Jeffrey Lehman, also has been fined $2,000 for the same violation. This is the third time that Infosys has punished a member of its top brass. Earlier, it had imposed a penalty on its director Srinath Batni. In a notice to the US SEC, Infosys said Mr Gopalakrishnan had inherited 12,800 equity shares from his mother on December 24, 2007 but had inadvertently failed to notify the company within one business day after the change in his shareholding. This, according to the company, constituted a violation of its insider trading rules. But Infosys’ audit committee believed that Mr Gopalakrishnan had no intention of contravening the rules and imposed the penalty of Rs 5 lakh and directed him to donate the amount to a charitable organisation of his choice. Mr Gopalakrishnan has made the donation. Mr Lehman was also imposed a penalty of $2,000 for failure to correctly follow the procedure on sale of shares and that amount, too, has been given to charity.

Indian exports to reach $150 b this fiscal !!!

India's exports will touch $150 billion in fiscal 2007-08 against the target of $160 billion due to a sluggish US economy and the rising rupee, said a senior official.
"Exports of $150 billion are certain this year. If there is a surge, they could even go up to $155 billion," Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai told reporters on the sidelines of an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here Wednesday.
Pillai also said that in the coming fiscal (2008-09), an export target of $200 billion could be achieved.
He indicated that certain promotional schemes targeted at exporters might be done away with due to their minimal benefit. He invited suggestions from the industry in this regard.
"Our trade policy is complicated. This discourages our exporters. The focus should shift from getting a number of approvals from various government agencies to self-certification. The majority should not suffer for misdeeds of a handful of unscrupulous exporters," he said.
"We should have only meaningful incentives to promote the competitiveness of our exporters."
Pillai urged India Inc to provide its inputs and feedback for the Krishnamurty Committee, which is expected to submit its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by end of this month.
The prime minister set up the Krishnamurty Committee to evaluate and examine methods of providing relief to the rupee-hit exporters, especially in sectors such as textiles, leather and handicraft, which have been witnessing shrinking profits and job losses.

An animated version of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth is set to wow fans in a 3-D film that features him in the role of an armour-clad warrior -- with a whole new set of his trademark mannerisms.
In "Sultan - The Warrior", directed by daughter Soundarya, Rajinikanth dons the persona of a swordsman with an uncanny resemblance to the 58-year-old actor.
"Thousands of years from now when you look up Indian entertainment history and you say animation, Rajinikanth will be the first man to (have) ever been animated," Soundarya said in an interview.
The animation film, slated for release in 12 languages by the end of 2008, is being promoted as a completely commercial venture and includes four song-and-dance sequences.
"It is a period film…on the lines of 'Troy' and 'Gladiator'…it is more of a war movie," the director said. "(But) It has everything a Rajinikanth commercial film needs in it".
Rajinikanth's unique acting style is characterised by a trademark gesture: toss a cigarette in the air, catch it in his lips, then light it with a match struck on a shirt sleeve.
In "Sultan - The Warrior", fans will get to see some new additions to his repository of popular mannerisms.
"Not only what he is already famous for but some new ones which my dad and I have personally worked on," said Soundarya.
"I want to do something that will become a trendsetter after 'Sultan', so lot of new mannerisms."
Rajnikanth's last film, "Sivaji -- The Boss", was a blockbuster hit in 2007 and fans are looking forward to seeing the superstar in a new avatar.
"We love Rajinikanth and we will go to see any film that he is in because we are sure that the film will be good," said businessman Vijay Menon. "Seeing Rajinikanth in an animation film will be a great experience."
Although his popularity remains largely restricted to southern India and the Tamil diaspora, Rajinikanth has also gained a cult following in Japan after his film "Muthu" was released there in 1998.

Raj TV to add more channels !!!

Raj Television Network Ltd is planning to expand its bouquet of channels by adding a few more in another twenty months involving a capital expenditure of Rs 50 crore. According to Mr M. Ravindran, the company will foray into other languages including Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. Announcing the launch of its free-to-air music channel – Raj Musix, he said Raj will also launch a Tamil news channel soon.
Currently, it has two entertainment channels — Raj TV and Raj Digital Plus, and both are free-to-air.
The new music channel, which is set to go on air from Wednesday (January 23), will beam programmes 24X7.
Apart from music, Raj Musix will also offer some infotainment programmes under its Lifestyle section. Essentially, it will have five hours of live programmes and five hours of recorded programmes everyday, said Mr Ravindran.
It is expected that the channel will add Rs 3 crore to the company’s topline in the first year of operation.

People at times have disturbed sleep or headaches due to lack of sleep. The study made by researchers from the US and Sweden have found out that radiations emitting from mobile phones cause headaches and interrupt vital sleep patterns.
The researchers from Wayne State University in the US and Swedens Karolinska Institute explained that people who were exposed to mobile radiations were found to experience headaches, change of moods, confusion and trouble in sleeping.
The study made from the exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, affected components of sleep, which are important for recovery from daily wear and tear.
The researchers also said that the mobile phone radiation extended the period of time it took for participants to fall asleep. While under the radiofrequency exposure conditions people tend to have a longer latency to deep sleep.
The study made by the researchers was funded by Mobile Manufacturers Forum (MMF) like Nokia and Motorola.
Bengt Arnetz told that mobile phone radiation decreased the participants’ ability to wind down and fall asleep.
So while sleeping, people should keep their mobile phones away as the radiation affects their sleep.

Life on Mars? Well, bizarre images have emerged showing a mystery female figure walking down a hill on the arid planet. The photo of what looks like a naked woman with her arm outstretched was among several taken on the red planet and sent back to Earth by NASA's Mars explorer Spirit, the 'Daily Mail' reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed Web site. Though no official confirmation has come from NASA whether the figure is an alien or an optical illusion caused by a landscape on Mars, it has s et the Internet abuzz that there really is life on Mars.
The news of the mystery woman on Mars came just days after a team of French scientists claimed to have discovered proof that the red planet possesses high-level dense clouds of dry ice, which scud across its orange sky. Using data obtained by the OMEGA spectrometer on board ESA's Mars Express, the team found the existence of the ice clouds which sometimes become so dense that they throw quite dark shadows on the dusty surface of the red planet.
"This is the first time that carbon dioxide ice clouds on Mars have been imaged and identified from above. This is important because the images tell us not only about their shape, but also their size and density. Previously, we had to rely on indirect i nformation. However, it is very difficult to separate the signals coming from the clouds, atmosphere and surface,'' according to lead scientist Franck Montmessin of the Service d'Aeronomie at University of Versailles.

India puts Israeli spy craft in orbit !!!

Marking a deepening of strategic ties, India on Monday launched a 300-kg Israeli spy satellite. The hush-hush liftoff to put the hi-tech Tecsar reconnaissance satellite into orbit occurred at 9.15 am at Sriharikota. The launch using the proven four-stage Polar Satellite Lau-nch Vehicle (PSLV) was executed under a commercial contract between the Antrix Corporation, Isro' commercial arm, and the Israel Aircraft Industries. Tecsar was placed in its designated orbit 1,185 seconds after lift off. At a press conference in Chennai, Antrix executive director K R Sridhara Murthi confirmed the PSLV flight but refused to go into specifics of the satellite. Asked to confirm it was a spy satellite, Isro chairman G Madhavan Nair said: "As far as my knowledge goes it is a radar imaging satellite that will give features day and night through the clouds." Apart from marking a new high in relations with Israel, the launch also puts India firmly in a lucrative and competitive satellite launch market, so far dominated by countries like France and Russia. Murthi said the cost of the launch was Rs 55 crore. While normal rates in the international market ranged between US$ 15,000 and 20,000 dollars per kg, Antrix had charged more than 20,000 dollars because of the low weight and technical features of the satellite. Originally the satellite was to have been launched in the first week of September 2007, prior to the International Astronautical Congress at Hyderabad. TOI had reported about launch plans at that time. Although Nair had cited "operational reasons" for the launch delay, scientists in Mumbai said the mission was put off because of pressure from some Arab countries, with which India has always had closer political ties. Sources told TOI the satellite was equipped with what is known as a synthetic aperture radar which will enable it to capture extremely tiny objects, putting it firmly in the category of a spy satellite. It combines high resolution with large area coverage using a technology known as electronic beam steering. The satellite will be controlled by the Israeli defence ministry but some of the secret images taken by the satellite are likely to be shared with India, sources said.

If the government of the state of Andhra Pradesh gets to have its way, India will soon get its first ever 'Digital Entertainment City'. The Andhra Pradesh government, in collaboration with a consortium of business/commercial establishments in the state, is mulling the country's first 'Digital Entertainment City', to be located in the capital of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad.
A public-private partnership, the initiative involves the likes of Gemini TV, FXLabs, DQ Entertainment, and Suresh Productions. The proposed 'Digital Entertainment City' will house an eclectic mix of gaming and animation companies, film production houses and music studios, training academies and support offices, not to mention an entertainment complex -- all within one sprawling space. The 'Digital Entertainment City' will also have incubators for start-up companies to make and test their products. Towards this ambitious project, the Andhra Pradesh government will allot nearly 100 to 200 acres of land in and around Hyderabad. A special 'Digital Entertainment City Task Force' or DECTF has already been formed, comprising government representatives and biz leaders to spearhead and manage the 'Digital Entertainment City' project. Work on the project is expected to begin in June, with the first phase slated to reach completion by December this year. Commenting on the initiative, S K Joshi, secretary to the Andhra Pradesh government (Information Technology and Communications Department), said the 'Digital Entertainment City' will facilitate the development and establishment of a world-class infrastructure to encourage the growth of animation, gaming, television, film, multimedia, radio, music, and new media industries in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Sensex recovers 864 points !!!

The stock markets on Wednesday snapped a seven-day losing streak and added 864 points, the third biggest gain in a single day, thanks to a surprise rate cut by the US Federal Reserve.
The BSE barometer had lost 4,097.51 points or 19.67 per cent, in the last seven days.
The trigger hungry markets across the globe stabilised after the Federal Reserve announced an emergency inter-meeting rate cut of 75 basis points yesterday and gave indications that it will lower rates further.
The dramatic turnaround came even as investors worldwide appeared to doubt the efficacy of the measures, including the one announced by US President George W Bush to stimulate the economy with nearly USD 150 billion tax cuts.
The bellwether Sensex moved widely between 17,997.11 and 16,951.03 before ending the day at 17,594.07, a net rise of 864.13 points or 5.17 per cent from last close of 16,729.94.
The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange recorded highest ever point-wise rise of 304.10 points or 6.21 per cent to close at 5,203.40 from last close of 4,899.30.
Investors have, however, still not recovered from the mayhem on the bourses since Monday that saw a record 2284-point (12 per cent) fall in the BSE 30-share index.
They were concerned about heavy outflows in the last few days. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) pulled out over Rs 12,500 crore in five days between January 16 and 22. But, they bought shares worth Rs 7,670 crore in the Futures and Options on Tuesday.
Analysts too welcomed the pullback, saying "markets were clearly in an oversold zone."
They said it was a positive sign for the markets that key indices closed around the 200 day moving average yesterday.
Barring Taiwan, other Asian indices ended sharply higher by about 1.21 to 10.72 per cent while European markets traded lower during early trade.
Meanwhile, market participants expressed cautious optimism and said the global cues will play a crucial role to determine the future direction of the market.
RIL, SBI, BHEL, Grasim, REL and TCS Ltd were major gainers. 29 of 30 index-based stocks closed in the black.
The market breadth, however, was negative with 1,400 losers against 1,301 gainers.
The trading volume was relatively up at Rs 7,133.45 crore from Rs 6,861.32 crore on Tuesday. RNRL topped the list of highest traded securities with a turnover of Rs 466.06 crore followed by RPL (Rs 357.34 crore), RIL (Rs 332.35 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 256.81 crore) and REL (Rs 231.13 crore).
The broad-based BSE-100 index recouped by 563.16 points to 9,458.80 from previous close of 8,895.64.
The BSE-200 index and the Dollex-200 were quoted sharply higher at 2,236.52 and 941.55 at close compared to last close of 2,099.19 and 880.84 respectively. The BSE-500 Index shot up by 445.81 points to 7,182.93 from 6,737.12 and the Dollex-30 ended remarkably up at 3,652.54 from 3,461.77.

Bird Flu In WB !!!

Bird flu has spread to almost half of West Bengal with Cooch Behar and Hoogly being added on Wednesday to the list of districts affected by the disease even as the authorities said they may have to raise the target of culling 20 lakh chicken. Death of chicken was also reported from Howrah, bordering Kolkata.
Even in the already affected districts of Nadia and Murshidabad districts, more blocks have reported the disease, local administration officials said. "Samples of chicken sent from Cooch Behar and Hooghly districts to the High-risk Security Disease Laboratory (HSDL) in Bhopal yesterday tested positive," Animal Resources Development Minister Anisur Rahaman said.
Nine districts -- Birbhum, Murshidabad, South Dinajpur, Burdwan, Nadia, Bankura and Malda Cooch Behar and Hoogly -- out of 19 in the state have so far fallen prey to avian flu. "Steps are being taken to officially notify both districts as bird flu affected for the next course of action including culling," Rahaman said.
The samples which tested positive were from Dinhata in Cooch Behar district and Balagarh in Hooghly district, he said. There was, however, no case of humans beings being affected, the minister said.
The target of culling, set at 20 lakh spread over seven days, was also likely to be raised, he said. The daily target now was three lakh with 600 teams on the job from wednesday, he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Vice President, Rajiv Shukla, has defended the national selectors decision to drop experienced players - Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman - for next month's triangular series in Australia, but said it was not the end of the road for them. "They (the selectors) have struck a good combination in the form of both young and experienced players. And now, the game has many formats such as Tests, One Day and Twenty20. Therefore, we selected the best players for the tests, like Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, whose performances have been excellent," he said. "The team has been selected keeping in mind the Australian conditions, but this does not mean that the players like Dravid and Ganguly have been dropped permanently from One-dayers. Whenever the selectors feel they need them, they would be chosen as well," he added. Gautam Gambhir, who has cracked three centuries in the Ranji Trophy this season, has been included in the team, as have Suresh Raina, Praveen Kumar and Dinesh Karthik. The Tata Rs 1-lakh car is here! And it's called the Nano!Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata on Thursday unveiled the Tata Nano at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi.Details of the People's Car:Ratan Tata, while unveiling the nano, said: "The car will meet all current safety norms and all emission criteria. The pollution it will cause will be lower than 2-wheelers."The car, Tata said, is smaller than a Maruti but has 21 per cent more volume or space inside than the 800. He said that the dealer price of the car will be Rs 1 lakh, plus value-added tax (VAT) plus transport charges.The car will have a 624-cc petrol engine generating 33 bhp of power. It will sport a 30-litre fuel tank and 4-speed manual gearshift. The car will come with air conditioning, but will have no power steering. It will have front disk and rear drum brakes. The company claims mileage of 23 km per litre.The car's dashboard features just a speedometer, fuel gauge, and oil light. The car does not have reclining seats or radio. The shock absorbers are basic.Nano, the world's cheapest car, costs almost half of the cheapest car currently available anywhere in the world.''Since, a promise is a promise the standard dealer version will cost Rs 1 lakh,'' said Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata.He informed that the car is 8 per cent smaller bumper to bumper, than the Maruti800 but at the same time 21 per cent larger in its interiors and can sit up to four people.Dispelling myths that the car was not safe enough Tata said, 'The car has passed the full-frontal crash and the side impact crash''. He also side stepped emission concerns and said the car will meet Euro IV norms.While critics had been sceptical throughout about the car meeting safety and emission norms, coming as it is at that price, Tata said he was happy to announce that Nano meets all norms as would a modern car.The car is eight per cent shorter than Maruti 800 on bumper to bumper length, but is 21 per cent more spacious, claimed Tata.Alluding to fears expressed by environmentalist R K Pachauri and green activist Sunita Narain that the car at that price would add more vehicles on the road leading to higher vehicular pollution, Tata said the 624 cc, 33 HP petrol engine meets Bharat Stage-III emission norms and can also meet the Euro 4 norms."Pachauri will not have a nightmare and Sunita Narain can also sleep," he quipped, while recalling that some people had suggested that the car should be called 'Pachauri' and some others said that it should be named 'Mamta' � probably referring to the position TMC leader Mamta Banerjee had taken against the setting up of the small-car project at Singur in West Bengal.Commenting on the safety standard, he said the car has gone through a full frontal crash test as per norms.The Nano will come in three variants -- standard and two deluxe models with AC. The standard car would be available for Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom), while VAT and transportation costs are extra.The Nano is expected to be commerically launched in the second half of 2008. News reports say that Tata Motors hopes to sell 500,000 units of the car, almost four times the number of Indicas it sells. Tata plans to focus on a market segment hitherto untapped.Not since the launch of the Maruti 800 in 1983 has any car gripped the imagination of a nation and indeed car manufacturers the world over so intensely. If commercially successful, the Tata Nano can alter the passenger car market in India, and perhaps the world, beyond description.
